Er is gewoon in lange tijd geen speler geweest zoals Matthew Tkachuk. Hij heeft de offensieve karbonades om opeenvolgende seizoenen van 100 punten in twee verschillende teams te plaatsen. Hij is defensief een elite en hij combineert de persoonlijkheid van een agitator met een 6-foot-2, 201 frame waarmee hij zijn gewicht kan rondgooien. Belediging

Gedurende meer periodes wel dan niet in de serie hielden de Leafs stand voor hun leven en doorstonden rubberstormen. De Bolts overtroffen hen met 198-137 bij 5-tegen-5 in de serie. Het paar Mark Giordano en Justin Holl raakte in de problemen, met name Holl, met de Bolts met een duizelingwekkende 14-2 voorsprong op het ijs in Games 1-5. Geen enkel team stond in de eerste ronde meer scoringskansen per 60 minuten toe dan de Leafs. De Panthers behaalden de meeste van hun overwinningen in 2022/23 door hun tegenstanders te verslaan en waren ook niet perfect in de verdediging in ronde 1 tegen de Bruins, waarbij ze in alle zeven wedstrijden minstens drie doelpunten incasseerden. De Leafs/Panthers-matchup heeft de potentie om wat circuitmeetings op te leveren.

Samsonov ging op papier de eerste ronde in als de sterkste startende playoff-doelman van de Leafs in een paar decennia, wat veel zei over hoe erg het team pijn deed voor iemand waarop het in het net kon rekenen. Hij was een top-10-doelman tijdens het reguliere seizoen 2022-2023, maar begon zijn eerste 'postseason' als Leaf met één overwinning in de play-offs in zijn carrière. Hij ging de uitdaging aan tegen de Lightning en versloeg de toekomstige Hall of Famer Vasilevskiy gedurende het grootste deel van de serie. Samsonov was op geen enkele manier onverslaanbaar. Vooral voor het thuispubliek was hij wankeler, maar hij kwam door met de grote reddingen toen de Leafs ze echt nodig hadden. Hij kwam enorm omhoog tijdens de comeback-overwinningen van de Leafs in Games 3 en 4, en hij stopte alle 10 schoten die hij tegenkwam tijdens hun drie overwinningen in de verlenging. Wie zal er tegenover Samsonov staan? Als we in deze serie op zoek zijn naar een ongrijpbare verhaallijn om goed naar te kijken, dan is dat het concept van thuisijs. Pas op voor de sneeuwvogels. De Leafs hebben al vier van de zeven mogelijke wedstrijden thuis, en het is mogelijk dat ze de FLA Live Arena vullen met een groot contingent blauwe en witte truien. Als er enige twijfel bestond dat het een legitieme zorg is voor de Panthers, dan hebben ze dat alheeft maandag een verklaring afgegevenwat aangeeft dat ze de toegang tot tickets beperkten tot Amerikaanse staatsburgers.
